Futureworks writes a new script for media education in Manchester
In a bid to strengthen its position as Manchester’s only purpose-built media school, Futureworks is investing in its popular film and television department and introducing a new scriptwriting course in March 2010.
Futureworks has brought in the expertise of tutor Beth McCann to deliver the course sessions. Beth is a lecturer at Salford and Bolton Universities on both Bachelor and Master scriptwriting degree programmes and delivers workshops on scriptwriting through her own company. Beth also acts as a script consultant for Northwest Vision and Media and most recently helped to develop six short films which are set to go into production. In addition to supporting new writers on up to 50 scripts a week, Beth is also a professional actor.
Beth is also the co-director of the Not Part Of festival, the fringe to Manchester International Festival, which attracted over 24,000 visitors in 2009.
Futureworks will initially offer a two day introduction to scriptwriting for screen course, led by Beth. Graduates of this course can then go on to study an intense six week scriptwriting for screen course, a 12 week scriptwriting for TV, film and shorts course, or a 12 week script to screen course – which will see students develop a short film script which will go into production via Futureworks’ film and TV production course.
Beth commented: “My passion lies in identifying, developing and nurturing writing talent. These courses are for both those who are new to writing and established writers who simply want to develop their skills and get a fresh stimulus from other writers.”
Chris Mayo, Managing Director of Futureworks, added: “Our film and television courses have proved extremely popular with last year’s enrolment oversubscribed and only a few places remaining for the forthcoming September admission. It therefore made perfect sense for us to develop this department’s offerings and Beth’s acting talent and scriptwriting expertise made her the perfect candidate to do just that.”
